Southern at War 2009
Agreed wording of an apology printed by Steam Railway on 2 April 2010
In issue 363 of Steam Railway dated May 29-June 25 2009, Steam Railway published on page 19 an article entitled “Mock Execution causes outrage”. This article related to the Bluebell Railway’s 2009 Southern at War event. The article was illustrated with two photographs by Derek Hayward.
Steam Railway sourced these images from Mr Hayward’s website, via the Bluebell Railway website, but removed the pictures from the website without the owner’s knowledge or consent. Steam Railway also removed copyright markings from the pictures.
Steam Railway has been informed that one of the photographs used to illustrate this article was not in fact taken on the day in question and accepts that reasonable steps should have been taken to establish the authenticity of pictures. We have been informed that no distress was caused to any customer of the Bluebell Railway when these pictures were taken and that the railway received no complaints in relation to this matter.
We acknowledge that the owner of the photographs, Mr Derek Hayward, was given no opportunity to consider, agree or to comment on the wording of the above mentioned article, and he neither consented to, nor collaborated with, the preparation of the article.
Steam Railway would like to apologise unreservedly for our actions and for any embarrassment it may have caused to Mr Hayward or his colleagues. We would also like to apologise for the incorrect crediting of these images.
