Southern Railway (SR) Maunsell U-Class 2-6-0, 1638, later 31638, arrived on the Bluebell Railway on 30 July 1980. Originally purchased by Bluebell member the late George Nickson, the engine was generously donated to the railway and is now owned by the Bluebell Railway PLC.

Placed on long term loan to the Maunsell Society the engine was restored and entered service in February 2006. In 2013 the locomotive was taken out of service for a period to allow copper welding repairs to it's firebox. However this repair cannot be repeated and a new firebox will be required when it next receives an overhaul. The engine's boiler certificate notionally expired in 2016, but it was never expected to remain in traffic for that length of time, and it was withdrawn from service on 4 July 2015.
