Sheffield Park Carriage Shed (Woodpax HLF Project) 2011

The Woodpax site formed the basis for Phase 3 of Operation Undercover, which provided covered accomodation for up to 17 carriages, a new museum building, a new locomotive washout pit, and the repair and reconstruction of the platform buildings and canopy and provision of toilets on platform 2 at Sheffield Park Station. The total project cost was £3.9 million, of which £2.875 million was covered by a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund. Please note that the Sheffield Park Carriage Shed and the Locomotive Washout Pit are strictly out of bounds except to authorised personnel.

Three collections feature the construction of the Sheffield Park Carriage Shed, covering 2012, 2011 and 2009-2010 respectively. Together there are approximately 1260 photos available, arranged in roughly date order, with the most recent at the start of each gallery.

The specialists working on the zinc roof had one final top strip to fit (laying on the roof) in the position indicated by the right hand green arrow, and also one edge strip (also arrowed). An interesting discussion with the contractors made me aware that the flat surface of a zinc roof is weak, whereas the curved sections are strong. There is a natural tendency to tread on the wrong part of the roof, which can cause damage. Looking across at the Platform 1 canopy (in the background) the contractors could see where that had happened over the years. 24.02.2011 6007
